Family Therapy/Chosen Families
Family Therapy
Sometimes the very best way to resolve a problem that is affecting the whole family is to bring the whole family to therapy.
I work with families of all kinds – biological families, chosen families, blended families, adoptive families, extended and multi-generational families – to reduce conflict and restore connections. Sometimes the stresses on the family come from difficult circumstances, such a family member’s illness or disability, addiction, absence, or death. Sometimes the challenges come from within the family, where divisions, jealousies, and opposing needs or personalities cause friction and division. I help families reconcile differences, build coping skills, and deepen bonds with each other in a way that restores and strengthens the loving connections and secure feelings between family members.
Support for Creatively Built Families
“Family isn’t defined only by last names or by blood. It’s defined by commitment and by love.”
– Dave Willis, Author
When figuring out how to build your uniquely-you family, you don’t have to go it alone.
Deciding what your family will look like, or how it will come to be, isn’t the same for everyone. Perhaps you’re considering solo parenting, co-parenting with a non-romantic partner, adoption, surrogacy, egg or sperm donation, or creating family with more than two parents.
Whether you’re in a straight or queer relationship, a platonic friendship, or going solo, I can help you work through every corner of what you need to consider to be sure you are creating a family in a way that deeply satisfies your vision and dreams.
As your guide, I can help with things like
- Considering all the options
- Defining your vision and creating a plan to match
- Anticipating what, and who, is needed to make the dream a reality
- Emotionally clarifying and processing each step
- Ensuring all parties feel heard, included, and supported throughout the process
- Anticipating or resolving conflicts as they arise
- Taking account of everyone’s needs, including the future child
- Helping you stay grounded and focused
- Practical planning, logistics and preparation
- Supporting, guiding, and sustaining you along the way
